Ocean Captures Silver at Pentathlon Championships [UPDATED]

Congratulations to Ocean Schwartz who won the Silver Medal in the South of England Indoor U15 & U17 Pentathlon Championships at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre in north London on Sunday with 2490 points. Ocean won 3 events - the High Jump with a pb of 1m 72, the Long Jump with 5m 47 1 cm below his best and the 1000 metres in 3m 16.43. Ocean was 3rd in the 60 metre hurdles in 9.83 secs and even in his weakest event the Shot broke his pb with 8m 04.

In the same weekend, Ocean also competed in the South of England AA U15 High Jump and won it with 1m 70. So a great weekend for one of our club's star juniors.

Sportshall

Last Sunday Josh Watson and Lily Parkin-Brown represented Surrey in an U11 representative Sportshall Competition at Burgess Hill. They were members of a team of 26 selected athletes from across the county. The team manager, Laura White, said: "They were fantastic today, and did the county proud, gelling really well as a team, a trying their hardest. My target was simply to try to beat our last year's positions of 8th/8 in the girls and 7th/8 in the boys, on the basis that we still have far less Sportshall experience than the other 7 teams we were up against! So, mission accomplished, the girls finished 7th, one place better than last year, but the boys were amazing and finished 3rd, only 2 points behind Hants who were 2nd, and 7 points behind the winners, Berks. So close and yet so far, but we were all utterly delighted, and the boys were really chuffed."

South London Athletics Network

At the SLAN Indoor Meet at Sutton on Sunday Holland Sports' athletes did well. Tom Rady won both of his U20 60 Metre Hurdles races in 9.32 and 9.1 secs. Ocean Schwartz came 2nd in the U15 Long Jump with 5m 32, a good season opener, and won his U15 60 Metre race in 7.9secs. Lucy Sumner came 2nd and 4th in her U13 60 Metres races in 8.83 and 8.93 secs.

U11 Sportshall, Leatherhead

A total of 86 athletes participated in this event organised by South Surrey Athletics Network. Please find here the team results. An excellent collection of photos from Sunday's U11 Sportshall event at Leatherhead has been uploaded to Flickr by Ben Hardisty. Click here to view them.

The feedback has been to hold another competition. The date will be either the 11th March or 19th March 2012. Start time of 1 or 2pm (due to feedback on some athletes needing time to travel from morning football/rugby etc). Venue TBA. Full details before the year is out.

U11 sportshall is a new concept and we are one of the few areas/networks to have run our own club competition. The primary focus of these events is fun competition, in the spirit of the rules giving a positive experience to all abilities, particularly those who have not competed before, which was the case for many of the athletes here. The South Surrey Athletics Network, who organise these events, have asked us to pass on their thanks to coaches, young athletes and parents that helped on the day, whether that was as judges or helping team managers. The Network rep commented that a mixture of experienced officials and young athletes officiating for the first time was fantastic to see. Also, there was lots of praise from the parents and athletes on how helpful and friendly the judges were, which is exactly what Sportshall is about.

Surrey Combined Championships, Sutton

Holland Sports AC had four athletes in the Surrey Combined Championships held at Sutton Arena at the weekend, and two new club records were set.

Ocean Schwartz, a first year U15, came 4th - and the three that beat him were 2nd year U15s. He had a poor long jump with 4m 66 (1 metre down on his best), but pb in High Jump 1m 64 and won his 80m hurdles race and 5th fastest overall in 13.93 (just outside Club Record), and 6.21 metres in the Shot. He then ran 800 Metres in 2m 30.52. Total points 1904 (Club Record).

In the U13s Fergus Donnelly was only allowed to compete as a guest as they did not receive his entry form - he would have come 4th. He broke the Club Record with 1,174 points. His performances were LJ 3m 98, 75m Hurdles 15.33, Shot 7m 47, High Jump 1m 32, 800 Metres 2m 59.45.

Woking Open

In the prestigious Woking Open Medal Meeting held on Sunday Ocean Schwartz came away with 3 medals. In the U15 High Jump in dreadful conditions Ocean, jumping beautifully, finished 2nd in 1m 55. In the Long Jump Ocean, despite being well below his best, won the Bronze with 5m 14. In the final of the 400 metres Ocean ran a swift 58.44 for the Silver Medal.

In the U11s Hugo Fowler ran a club record in the 80 metres recording 12.72 for 5th. In the Long Jump Hugo was 18th with 2m 88. Finally, Hugo came 15th in the 600 Metres with a time of 2m 13.54.

We have cleared the final hurdle on our way to Division 1.

All the athletes went the extra mile (as did the coach driver - but that's a be there thing!) but special mentions:- Ocean who having been thrown in at the deep end ran his first 400m like an old hand, storming to victory in 58.5; and the 4 x 400m squads who made quite a splash in the final event.

Hat trick for Holland!

On Sunday 19th June Holland Athletics won the third Division 2 NYAL meet at Eastbourne Rovers Athletics thanks to a great team effort. The turnout was excellent so the club was able compete in most of the events, eventually winning by a comfortable margin - go Holland! A special mention for Georgina Tatton who having had a bit of a run-in with her first hurdle went on to win the U15 A sprint hurdle race in a personal best of 12.9 with great style.

It was great to see so many gutsy (or should I say gusty?) performances with the following athletes also achieving personal bests - so in no particular order...

Two Out of Two for Holland's Young Athletes at Wimbledon!

The second NYAL match coincided with the end of half-term week, and although some of the athletes from the first match were unavailable, the remaining squad was boosted by athletes on seasonal debut, and also 5 new to the NYAL. The squad might have changed but the result was as emphatic a win as the match at Horsham a fortnight ago.

The 35 athletes achieved 2 National Grade 3 standards, one National Grade 4, 16 Surrey standards, and once again three club records were broken : Lucy Sumner (U13) took nearly a second off her 150m record, missing National Grade 3 by 0.1 seconds, while Ocean Schwartz (U15) broke both his High Jump and Long Jump records (the latter a massive 59 cm improvement and both were rated as National Grade 3). Lucy and Ocean were awarded Performances of the Meeting T shirts in recognition of their achievements.

The results of our athletes are shown below. Photos from Wimbledon can be viewed HERE.

Young Athletes' High and Lows at Horsham

There were mixed fortunes for our athletes at Sunday's first NYAL match. The lows were that due to a severe restriction on non-scoring events, brought about by insufficient time judges, many of our athletes couldn't compete in the events they wanted to. The highs were in the quantity and quality of those competing as scorers (both A and B), which meant that not only did we have several individual victories, but also won the whole match. A big thank you to all our club officials, parents and athletes, many who were taking time out from exam revision, for bringing success to the club. The performances of the 37 athletes was such that we achieved 3 National grades, 17 Surrey standards, and 3 club records were also broken : Ocean Schwarz in the U15 Long Jump with 4m 89; Catherine Ledesma in the U13 75 Metres with 11.2; and Lucy Sumner in the U13 150 Metres with 22.5 secs - congratulations to all three.
