Reports and Results Cross-Country 2006/07 Season
Surrey Men's Cross-Country League, Lightwater Country Park, Middlesex
10 February 2007
Holland fielded 13 runners for the final men's match of the cross-country season on a modified two-lap, five and a half mile course at Lightwater Country Park. But their valiant performances, which resulted in the club finishing in 6th position on the day, were in vain. Holland just failed to move ahead of Vets AC, and remained in 8th position overall, and was thus relegated again to Division 4.

Surrey Ladies' Cross-Country League, Richmond Park
10 February 2007
Holland were a runner short at Richmond Park, fielding four runners. Special mention must go to first finisher for Holland, Becky Kirk, who completed the 5.79 Km course in 27:23, and to second finisher, Charlotte Limpenny, who recorded 29:21. Team captain, Barbara Towers, was third scorer in a creditable 32:55, followed by Anja Silvani in 33:39. As a result Holland finished 12th out of 24 on the day, and 11th in the overall league result.

Surrey Ladies' Cross-Country League, Wimbledon
13 January 2007
Despite being a runner short of a full scoring team of five, Holland's women's cross-country team still beat many other long-established clubs. The team now lies 10th out of 32 in Division 2.
A special mention is due to Judith Britton, who for the first time in competing for the club was the first Holland Sports runner home - a great run. Also a mention for "virgin" Anja Silvani, who did well on her debut. Maria has a tip: do not start a diet a week before a race!

Surrey Men's Cross-Country League, Cranford Park, Middlesex
13 January 2007
The third of this season's four Surrey Cross-Country League fixtures, in which Divisions 3 and 4 run together, took place at a new venue, Cranford Park, Middlesex, close to Heathrow Airport. The fixture was fittingly hosted by British Airways. The course was flat and fast, three laps of mainly grassland including a stretch of gravel path through trees. It was slippery in places, but most of those who ran liked it.
Congratulations first of all to the Senior Men's debutants, Stuart Dickinson and Barry Fox, who both had excellent runs.
It was also great to see Steve Bishop competing for the first time this season, and although he said he was disappointed with his run, he was still first man home for Holland in a very creditable 9th place, holding his own amongst the Division's classy leading runners.
Second man home, in 14th place was Rob Hall, looking in good shape from his training for the London Marathon. Third man home was Andy Statham, Holland's promising 18 year old Junior runner. He started cautiously but cut through the field on the final lap, claiming about 20 places. Holland's next three runners packed well and came in within 7 seconds of each other. Tony O'Brien followed 30 seconds later, feeling relieved to have completed the course without undue knee pain. Gerry Simpson, Martin Berry, Nigel Bongers and Graham Pullen were Holland's remaining finishers.
Unfortunately the team only finished in seventh position out of nine in Division 3 on the day, meaning that Holland now lies in 8th position in the division and will have its work cut out at the fourth and final fixture at Lightwater Country Park on 10 February to avoid relegation. This is a plea for all Holland runners to make every effort to support the Club in this vital match!
Logistical difficulties connected with the match taking place in an unfamiliar location at an earlier time than usual meant that several valuable runners who would normally be counted on to reinforce the middle order failed to make it to the race, while another middle order runner was injured. To try to avoid such problems in future, coach Nigel Bongers says he will now include a recommended travelling time when letting people know about forthcoming cross-country fixtures; he also asks runners who are taking other runners along to races to make sure they have got their mobile numbers.

We must also highlight the contribution of debutant Thomas Rady in the U13's, who ran with his brother William, both having played rugby in the morning. And belated congratulations also to William on his excellent bronze medal winning run in the U11 category at the Holly Run races at Reigate Priory Park just before Christmas.
