Holland Men Promoted to Division 3 of Surrey League!
Matt Readwin wins Division 4 Plaque!

Holland's senior men gained promotion to Division 3 of the Surrey cross-country league at Wimbledon Parkside on Saturday. Having finished second on the day, they ended the season in second place overall in the league. Although well behind the Division 4 winners Ful-on Tri, they were still well ahead of the third placed club. Well done to all the runners who have turned out for Holland throughout the season. Click on the link below for detailed results.

Congratulations especially go to Matthew Readwin, who won the senior and veterans' Division 4 plaques, a great achievement.

Holland Ladies Well Up in Surrey League

Holland's lady cross-country runners have finished in a great ninth position overall in Division 2 of the Surrey cross-country league, following Saturday's performance on a testing Richmond Park course raced in unseasonally warm and sunny conditions. Led home by Becky Kirk, the 'A' team comprising the first five Holland runners, made up of Becky, Maggie Statham, Charlotte Limpenny, Christine Farnham and Maria Adaway, finished in seventh position on the day. And there were enough runners left over once again to form a two-person 'B' team of Glynis Doyle and Barbara Towers. Well done everyone.

Record Turnout for Holland Ladies at Reigate Cross-Country

Holland Sports fielded its largest ladies team for years at Priory Park, Reigate, on Saturday 12 January, for the third of the cross-country season's four Surrey League matches. We had so many runners the club had a B team in the results for the first time! Well done everyone for such a great turnout.

First home in 40th position was Maggie Statham, in 30:02, closely followed by Joan Wingfield in 41st position in 30:13. Next in was Christine Farnham (54th, 31:39), Karen Farnham (67th, 32:53), Donna Rudd (91st in 35:16), Cathy Hayes (108th in 38:06), Barbara Towers (115th in 38:46) and Anja Silvani (121st in 39.29).

The Holland A team (the first five runners) finished in 11th position in the match and now lie in 10th position overall in the league. The B team of three runners finished 28th out of 35 teams and have appeared for the first time in the overall league positions, in 39th position out of 41!

Boys Do Well at Surrey XC Champs

Holland Sport's thriving junior section was represented by four boys in the Under 13 race at the Surrey cross-country championships at Lloyd Park, Croydon. William Rady led home the team, followed by Sam Knight, Josh Cottingham, and James Miller. The individual results were:

  2. 43rd Sam Knight 15m 0secs
  3. 46th Josh Cottingham 15m 8secs
  4. 68th James Miller 16m 32secs

There were 81 runners.

Ex-Holland Sports star Hannah Brooks (one of the top junior 800 metre runners in the UK) won the Under 20 race in a thrilling finish.

Fine Junior Performances at Holly Run

A great day for Holland juniors at the annual Holly Run at Reigate Priory Park on Sunday 16 December. The day was cold, but it was windless and the ground conditions were good.

The Under 13 boys' team ran brilliantly in their race to secure the bronze team medal. Unfortunately only the first three to finish in the team counted so Sam and Zach who both ran well missed out on medals.

The results were:

  1. 11th William Rady 12 mins 28 secs
  2. 13th Luke Thompson 12m 35
  3. 16th Josh Cottingham 12m 52
  4. 20th Sam Knight 12m 59
  5. 29th Zach Leveridge 14m 28

In the Under 11 girls' race, Amelie Crevel finished in 32nd place in 9 minutes and 27 seconds. Well done Amelie.

Holland Youngsters Do Well at Camberley

On a cold day on a really tough course with a HUGE hill, especially daunting for the Under 9’s, our small band of athletes did really well at the Camberley Open Trophy cross-country meeting on Sunday, 18 November.

In the U13 Boys (19 runners) race, William Rady finished in 5th in 10 mins 26 secs.

In the U9 Girls, all our athletes were making their debut:

  1. 8th Amelie Crevel
  2. 9th Annabel Hayes
  3. 12th Jessica Hayes (only 7)

Despite feeling sick at the bottom of the hill Jessica still managed a spurt at the finish.

Holland Consolidates XC League Positions

Holland Sports fielded a full scoring team on the fast, flat course at Cranford Park, near Heathrow airport, for the second cross-country fixture of the season on Saturday. First scorer for the men was Scott Mean, followed by Rob Hall, Matt Readwin, newly landed British Airways pilot Andy Dunstan, Stuart Dickinson, Les Huitson, Gary Spring, Gerry Simpson, Brian Gifford and Arnold Rady. Completing the team were Nigel Bongers and Graham Pullen. In the U13 boys' race, Holland were represented by William Rady and James Miller. To see the complete results, click here (PDF file).

The women's team also fielded a full scoring team, of five. First home was Maggie Statham, followed by Joan Wingfield, Christine Farnham, Karen Farnham and Maria Adaway. For complete results, click here (PDF file).

Great Start to New Cross-Country Season

Senior Men's and Juniors' XC Races, Epsom Downs

Holland Sports entered an U13 Boys team for the first time in many years at Surrey League cross-country race on Epsom Downs. Unfortunately Josh Cottingham was badly spiked at the start and lost a shoe so we did not have five finishers. The other four however ran brilliantly to win the team race.

We also had another runner – Zach Leveridge – but unfortunately he turned up on Sunday! Better luck next time Zach.

It was also great to have as many as 15 running for Holland in the senior men's fixture, including two Dads of the U13 runners. One of them, Mark Thompson, did not even know he was running until he turned up! Well done Mark and Arnold Rady.

Holland finished in second position, led home by Steve Bishop, followed by Andy Dunstan. Well ahead of Holland and all the other teams on the day though were Ful-On Tri, a youthful Mortlake-based triathlon club. The club, established in 2003 but now grown rapidly to over 250 members, has decided to compete in the Surrey cross-country league for the first time; its runners packed the first 20 places.

Women's Division 2 XC Match, Esher

The women's cross-country race was run earlier in the day at West End Common, Esher. The weather was fine and the course a beautiful run through woods with a couple of sharp, challenging hills and descents thrown in. A great course provided you avoided tripping over the tree roots.

The Holland team was one short of the necessary five for a full scoring team, but those who did take part put in sterling work. First home was Maddy Lee-Smith, followed by Maggie Statham, Karen Farnham and Barbara Towers. The team did well to finish in 13th position out of 35.

Bruce Judd Relays Success for Juniors

Holland Sports entered an U13 Boys relay team in the Bruce Judd 3 x 2.3kms Relays at Stoke Park, Guildford on Saturday 6 October.

Team officially finished 11th out of 21 teams but we saw William Rady pip the other team just before the line so should have been given 10th! William’s time was the individual 9th fastest on the day. Well done, William.

Individual times in each leg were as follows:

  1. Sam Knight 8 mins 57 secs
  2. Zach Leveridge 9 mins 33 secs
  3. William Rady 8 mins 36 secs
